The dye can run on the base and that’s a problem. The dye will be absorbed by the base. You must keep the coloring away from the base. Some people pin the unit to a styrofoam head, turn it upside down and the apply the coloring. That way any excess runs away from the base (be sure to put some paper down to catch the excess).
