I'm new here and ready to take the plunge and place my first order. I have worn a "skin" base unit for years from a place in San Francisco. I was wondering whether I should order a stock with my custom to be able to practice how to apply and take care of it by the time the custom would arrive. I figure I would order all French lace the first time. Any advice greatly appreciated.

You just might find the stock unit works as well as the custom. By far the best topper I ever had was a stock unit that Debbie colored and cut in for me.
