The same thing can be achieved using packaging bubble wrap or pages of a glossy magazine.

The only problem I found was that unless the glue was already very soft, you could slide the glue off but take some of the hairs with it, which caused shedding.

And also of course, you're left with a filthy mirror that then needs cleaning, so you're back to using the solvents.
