You get up to 6" included in the price of your hair system. But that's a lot of hair. Customers find it difficult to do a proper attachment with all that hair before it's cutin. And going in to see their stylist with that mound of hair on your head makes waiting for the stylist a little 'uneasy.' So people can order a shorter length that is more manageable until they get it styled. Here's a photo of a hair style that's 3-4" long just to give you an idea of what they length looks like.
