I am a newbie from Melbourne who is looking into getting a TL piece asap. I could even break the record of going from not knowing a thing about hair pieces a month ago to being ready to make the big move to make a template and order a piece in. Toplace and the forum here are pbly the biggest influence for my decision.Great to see BA,Debbie and John taking interest and answering the endless questions.Its amazing what some of the guys here achieved with their pieces. Very inspirational !!

As for me I was one of those unlucky ones that started thinning on top when I was 17 which was a huge blow to my outlook on things and most of all confidence. I'm 26 now and can strongly agree that my diffuse hair loss had a massive impact on my life and even more since I started wearing concealers. Geez!! those things are god awfully messy and severely limit what I can do. I seriously cant wait to throw my GLH spray and Toppik out of the window.(They got me this far without anyone suspecting that I was severly thin up top but they still goto go :twisted: ) Anyways instead of crying about the past I want to look forward into the future and I think its time to make the big move and I'm all psyched up 8-).

I will be asking a few questions and having gone thru previous posts by other members I will try not to ask anything that has been asked many times before.
:arrow: Firstly, is there any guys from Melbourne here?? Just want to know if there are any experienced Hair dressers in Melbourne that can make a template up for me and also do the first cut in/style etc..
:arrow: If I get a stock piece can I still choose the hair colour,wave,style etc or is it just one fixed type for all. Also is the wait time shown in the 'Shipping' info for a stock piece or a custom piece? Will the stock piece be any quicker??
:arrow: For a beginner how manageable is an SFS base to apply and clean? I am planning to go all SFS to begin with as the first few months people will be a bit suss about my smooth shiny hair compared to the birds nest it used to be with all that concealer. I want to show streaks of scalp over the front without the lace showing even from close inspection but also dont want anything that will rip easy under my inexperienced hands. Input from newbie SFS wearers will help.

I'm in Adelaide but was in Melbourne last week and to my surprise noticed a couple of "Wigs" specialist sales signs in Swanston Street. I didn't ask......

If you do a search under Melbourne both on this forum and the old one you'll find a few places there that'll do cut ins. Stay away from the big salons as they'll charge an arm and a leg for a cut in service. I can get them done here by an independent hairdresser for $60, but the last full cap I cut in myself on the head using professional sissors and a razor (and two big mirrors).

You can specify exactly what you want. To order you can use the online form or, do what I do and just put what you want on a sheet and send it to John. Things like colour, densities, base, hairline contour, venting and so forth, the more precise the better. Allow a couple of months for it to arrive (sometimes less).

Personally to start with I would go for all 64 French maybe with a 2 inch SFS hairline, although 64 by itself is pretty good and ideal for a beginner. And order more than one so you've got a backup available.

I'm in Melbourne & I've been to a couple of places in Melbourne for cut ins. Originally I was going to Ultra Hair in the city but then they told me unless I buy their hair they will no longer service me. As you can imagine I have never spoken or been back there since. There was some nice ladies there It would have just been a management decision. That was a blessing in disguise, cause it made me look around again for another place. I ended going to Advanced hair in Dandenong. They only charged $100, that's just about the cheapest you'll get in Melbourne for a cut in compared to $170 from Ultra hair. but since then I've now bought my first stock pieces & done my own cut in's as well. I think everyone should learn to cut in their own hair, but i understand it's a little scary at first & getting an experienced person for cut ins at first is the way to go. Debbie does offer a cutting service I've never tried this but I've heard good reports. You just need to send in some pics of the style your after & she'll do it. All you might need to do is just some fine adjusting. Making a template isn't that hard, u can do this yourself no probs, watch this video & give it a try.

What u said is right TRACO but the wig shops I enquired all said they never did a template or attach a piece other than their own. They just have stock pieces that they apparently cut and style to suit me.(I'll keep away from these ones or I'll end up looking like a typical Carpet head..CALL..CALL..CARPET CALL..lol) :o
I'll pbly try doing a template up myself and send it off with all the requirements. Only reason I asked is that a lot of posts from experienced users suggest ordering the stock piece because it is usually better built than a custom and less variation between pieces occur. Either way I will pbly order a custom and go to a professional salon to start with and once I'm more used to it will pbly try cutting a stock piece in myself.
For $100 I'd definitely try Advanced hair for the piece of mind(err..i meant peace..lol) and pbly get my regular hair stylist to copy it with my second piece. And tnx for the video link too DWNUNDR, I'll try doing that this weekend and send my order in asap.
I'm planning to do a smooth transition as no one knows that I am thin on top so I got to be extra careful. Taking 3 weeks off work so hopefully in that time I get used to the piece etc..

so with a stock piece do u still get to choose the front contour,density,colour, wave etc,or do u have to do it all urself ? On the order form there is no mention of the so called stock piece. Also how long does a stock piece take compared to a custom to receive once u ordered?

ok i'm only new at ordering stock pieces but as far as I'm aware you can only order one colour. If you wanted the front a different colour like blonde you'd probably have to do that yourself. I think you can order stocks with a certain percentage of hightlights through out for example 5% grey all through. Have you searched out sester from the old forum? he is in Sydney & he has been doing stocks for a long time now. He bleaches the front of his with blonde highlights. He always does a pretty good job with stock pieces. But now he's getting pieces from BA with custom highlights in the front cause it's the same specs BA wears. I've only had one stock piece delivered so far & it took around 7-10days to get to me i think. alot better than customs. If you really wanted it quick you could get BA to express post it I remember Sester from Sydney saying he got his in 2 days once. That's extremely quick delivery for Australia. Density is all pretty much the same on stocks around 65% Just ask BA if he has other densities though he could have up to 10% variation. you can choose front contour, you can get different ventilation like freestyle or flat back. Freestyle is usually the safe option to start of with i feel.

Hi guys hope you all had a merry christmas.
Here is my plan and am looking for some feedback from someone who used a stock piece with similar specs.
I want to get a stock piece with pbly a AA contour and 60% density to start with. Most importantly I need to get the curl right and I think 'Slight wave' will be more of a match to my existing hair. Also my colour is Off black.
Once I get the piece I want to go to Advanced hair or any other pro stylist and get it cut in and styled for the first time.
DOWNUNDR do u think this is easily do-able. Only reason I would go for a stock is mainly because I read that there is less variation between pieces and a more natural appearance. If not then I'll go a custom and still go to Advanced hair for a cut in/style.
I cant wait for feb so I can get this done and hopefully I get it right the first time. :roll:

I think this will be fine except that I'm not sure if they would cut the stock piece down? You can always ask them if they will. If not it's not that hard to cut it down yourself anyway. I cut mine down with one of those really sharp electrical blades, i bought it fom bunnings. Your definatly in the right place though, there are plenty of people on here willing to help others out.

Very true..Its great to hear and see other guys who are pretty much in the same shoes. Glad I found this place before too late. I still need to decide on a couple of things before ordering my first piece. Hopefully it all goes well. :?
