I wanted to ask if anyone knew of a product to remove the brassy gold tones from the pieces after they have had a bit of wear and tear. I know a good product is the Back to Natural colour conditioners however I am in Australia and they are too costly to buy plus the shipping. I know there are plenty of "toners" and "shampoos" on the market that people use to keep their blonde hair looking great but are they going to have the same effect at replenishing the dark ash tones of a #6ash coloured (original colour) hair piece?

Great question! I've been looking for a solution too. I tried a conditioner that is meant to take brass out of blonde hair but it didn't do anything. I can't find anything for brown hair. But in theory the solution should be simple enough. All we need is a dye which is the exact opposite colour of the colour we want to remove and use that for a few minutes. If i's still brassy, repeat for another few mins until you get the brassiness out. I am thinking some shade of blue would do it. But where do we get a pure blue hair dye? If we could get it, we could mix it up with a weak developer and comb it through the hair for a very short time. Or add a little to our normal colour brown dye and do it that way.

Pure ASH tone is actually blue. You can get it from a professional hairdressing supplier.
It very strong so you have to use it quite carefully.

The effects last a few weeks. It can be messy to work with.
Best to dip your comb in some and apply it that way to avoid contact with the base.

L'Oreal also do a similar product in their Expert Series called Silver Gloss Protect System.

Hersute, I have a tube of pure ash tone from Wella Koleston and I used to mix in about 1/4 ash to 3/4 m normal brown shade when I coloured and it made no difference to the gold tones. I didn't realise ash was blue. Maybe I need to try it on it's own for a few minutes on an old piece. Thanks for this info.

Try mixing it up with the developer and then adding some water so its quite runny.
Then comb it through.
By the time you've combed it through all over, it will practically be time to rinse it off.
Best to do 2-3 of these than 1 really strong one that takes it too far and gives you blue hair.
Unless of course you plan on auditioning for Avatar II The Sequel!

Ps. Next time, if you order a brown colour from Wella, buy the same number you usually buy but with NA after it (eg. 6NA)
The NA stands for Natural Ash and means it won't have any brassy tones.
If you hair is VERY ash then you can get an 'A' eg. 6A which is stronger.

Thanks Hersute for the help. You are really clued in with the colouring. Do you colour your own hair too? My usual colour is actually one of the Indola range as it matches what I want better than any of the Koleston browns. There are no letters for these colours, just numbers so it;s hard to know what's best. I did a test with the ash Koleston today on some paper and it came out green. That makes sense as green is the opposite of red so it woult neutralise red tones, but my pieces have more gold/brass so I think a blue would be better. I'd like to use an Indola ash/blue of some kind. Do you think there's anything in this list that would be the one?

If you were to use this:

You would get the ash but not add any more colour.
You need to make sure the developer you're using is 10% Vol.
Any higher and it will lighten the hair and bring out the under tones.

The best colours are Topchic. They're very 'true'.

They do some 'violet' colours which would tone down golds.

I appreciate all the replies but you all just confused me even more, you sound like your talking about actually colouring the hair which scares me, leave it on too long and its comes out black, too less and it doesnt work so Ive got to buy more. I was just after an alternative to the back 2 natural products which are a simple conditioner with blue/purple tones in them but there is more tone in the back 2 natural than the common pigment conditioners you get from the shops.

I called a price attack store and asked her opinion and she suggested trying "goldwell soft colour mousse 6A" she said theres no danger of it going it too dark, any opinions?
