i did 2 mock ups one with out small corner flaps and one with...i havent had time to do one of the front facing.
in one of the pics you'll see a dotted outline in the hair, pay no mind to that.

if you were to keep your hair short i would say go for a light density..which would rule out a stock piece.
although a stylist can thin out the bulk (appearance) by around 10% it doesnt actually chang... |

i would advise that you get synthetic gray. the reason being is that it cant be dyed. sun, washing and products used to detach and clean the unit all can affect color. after some time you may need to ... |

it is easy...i use a thin artist brush nd put little dots on the lace side maybe a 1/4" apart...let it sit...rinse thoroughly...i then slightly tub to remove affected hair...shake it out to shed more.... |

you dont use the piece to make the template...detach..use a clear shower cap...the following is copy and pasted

what i do when i wear lace with tape is.......do the taping around the perimeter, minus the front if gluing....peel and fold back the paper backing at the end of each piece of tape.....i mark the hair... |

you need to post pics...but yes you can replace the front....the hairline contour is really dependent on how much side/temple recession you have...you don't want a hair line that is unnaturally long..... |

thats the stuff you put on the lace when dyeing a unit. i have used it and it worked.
i wouldnt take it as a license to just slather the dye on. i was still careful and used it as a just in case |

i think if you can get a tight fit for the template you wouldn't need to shave (you could just slick it down with water or product) , i guess it depends on just how much hair you have. perhaps others ... |
