I've always had trouble staining the lace when recoloring my full cap. Always a few places that got hair color on it and turned the lace black in some areas. Well, I read about the Clothes Sizing and Spray Starch used to iron shirts. I spray the underside of the unit with Sizing, let it dry, then spray over it with medium Spray Starch, let it dry. Then I use Loreal Hair Color, applying by combing it through the hair. Let stand the required time, then rinse in cool water. Works like a charm. I've done it 3 times and not one stain on the lace.
