Is it common for full caps to matt really bad at the back and sides after you've jsut woken up. The hair is just over an inch long and whenever I wake up it is severely matted.

Yes and so does natural hair to an extent, Unless its really short I have never seen anyone get up in the morning with a good looking Barnet.
Silk Pillowcases do help somewhat with this problem.
